AM: Arrival (03:40Hrs- early morning) and meet our representative at the airport and drive Kandy.Before leaving to Kandy stop at a restaurant near Airport for a snack (Tea and Snack will be served) En route visit Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage. This Elephant Orphanage located in the Kegalle district was first established on 16th February 1975. At the beginning there were only five orphaned baby elephants but now the Orphanage is home to 88 elephants which include 37 males and 51 females spanning three generations. This is said to be the largest set of captive elephants in the world established by the Sri Lanka Department of Wildlife and Conservation. There are 48 mahouts or handlers who look after the elephants. Usually the female and baby elephants roam freely during the day where they are guided twice a day to drink water and bathe. The adult males are used to do some work such as general lifting throughout the orphanage. They feed on large quantities of jackfruit, coconut, kithul or palm sugar. Elephants have been born in Pinnawela itself (in 1984), the first calf known to be a female and named as Sukumalee If you could reach the Orphanage by 09:15 hrs you will be in time to see the baby elephants being bottle-fed. At 10:00hrs the entire herd is taken to the river for a bath. AM: After breakfast drive to Ramboda On the way you will visit a high grown Tea Plantation and a Factory. You can try out to identify the fresh leaves suitable for plucking, and how to pluck the tips of each branch correctly. Finally enjoy a cup of freshly brewed tea.You could also view Ramboda Water Falls and some mini waterfalls en-route PM: On completion drive to Kandy Then visit the Kandy Temple - The Golden Roofed Dalada Maligawa, where the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha is enshrined. It is believed by the Buddhists that the blessings of the sacred Tooth Relic have protected this country for the past 2500 years. The sacred Tooth, which is Buddhist’s left canine, was brought by Prince Danta and Princess Hemamala from India. The highlight of the city’s calendar is the Esala Procession is the unique cultural show in Asia, where a replica of the casket is taken in procession for 10 glittering nights in July/August by exotically costumed dancers, drummers and caparisoned Elephants. AM: After breakfast drive to Colombo En route visit Peradeniya Botanical Garden - which is located less than four miles from Kandy on the Colombo road. Being 1,540 feet above sea level, it covers approximately 150 acres and well known for its large variety of plants and creepers. The best attraction is the orchid house, which houses more than 300 orchids and the nutmeg grove. Established in 1821 the garden receives an annual rainfall of 85”and highlighted in the New Strait Times of America as “ONE OF THE BEST KEPT SECRETS OF KANDY” PM: Check in to your hotel in Colombo Engage in a Colombo city tour - Sri Lanka’s commercial capital is an interesting blend of the varying influences, is located on the west coast of the island. Zoological Gardens is situated from about 8Km from South of Colombo, in Dehiwala. The Pettah Bazzar, Gangaramaya, Simamalakaya, National Art Gallery are some interested places to visit.
